The Idaho Veterans Research and Education Foundation received a Center of Biomedical Research Excellence (COBRE) award from the National Institute of General Medical Sciences of the National Institutes of Health under Award Number P20GM109007 on June 1, 2016.

Objective:

The COBRE Program Director (PD), Dr. Dennis Stevens, and the Idaho Veterans Research and Education Foundation (IVREF) seek to establish a well-equipped, multi-disciplinary, broadly-supported, and ultimately self-sustaining Biomedical Research Center of Excellence (COE) in Emerging/Re-emerging Infectious Diseases at its partner institution – the Boise Idaho Veterans Affairs Medical Center (VAMC).

The long-term thematic objective of this Infectious Diseases COE is to discover, develop, and advance novel new approaches to prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of severe life-threatening infections plaguing people of all ages worldwide.  In keeping with this objective, the specific projects outlined in this COBRE proposal will target the pathogenic mechanisms responsible for a different severe infection, each caused by an emerging/reemerging Gram positive toxin-producing pathogen.  Each junior investigator has been carefully selected for his/her unique expertise in a different scientific discipline, but having shared interest in infectious disease pathogenesis and treatment.  The PD has recruited exceptionally strong mentors for each investigator, and a comprehensive mentoring plan to ensure that their transition to research independence has been developed.  His multi-faceted plan to grown and sustain this unique cooperative Infectious Disease COE in Idaho includes strategies to increase the critical number of investigators and their scientific diversity.  The multi-disciplinary approach to a shared scientific goal, combined with the PD’s leadership style that motivates all team members to work openly and collaboratively ensures that the components of the COBRE will function synergistically to achieve an integrated outcome far greater than the sum of its parts.
